Double Arch at Sunset
Double Arch at Sunset, Arches National Park, Utah
Double Arch, in the Windows section of Arches National Park, is a gigantic, open-air cathedral in the desert. The arch actually has three openings: one faces west, another south, while the third lies directly overhead. While exploring inside the arch, I discovered that I could scramble high onto the east wall. Upon taking a compass bearing, I discovered that at certain times of the year, the setting sun would be visible through the western arch. I returned several months later at the right time and photographed Double Arch as the reddish light from the setting sun bounced off the wall behind me and illuminated the underneath side of the arches with a wonderful golden glow.
