Geminid Meteor Shower from Bear Lake

Geminid meteor shower over Bear Lake and Longs Peak, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Geminid Meteor Shower from Bear Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

The Perseids and Geminids are always the year’s best meteor showers. In 2015 both coincided with new moon, so every fiery streak stood out boldly against the midnight blue sky. After shooting the Perseids from Snowfield Lake in August, I was eager to shoot the Geminids on the night of December 13-14. I laid plans to drive seven hours from my home in Boulder to Arches National Park to shoot the Geminids over Delicate Arch, but as the time grew close, the weather forecast turned gloomy. I scoured the weather maps for any location within a day’s drive of Boulder that promised clear skies, but came up empty-handed. At last I resigned myself to missing this year’s shower and waiting two years until the Geminids would once again coincide with new moon. In midafternoon on December 13th, with the shower set to begin in a few short hours, I checked the National Weather Service point forecast for nearby Rocky Mountain National Park for the last time. Still cloudy. Then, on a whim, I checked the park service web cams. To my surprise, they showed much clearer skies than forecast. Next I checked the sky-conditions forecast on It called for a bank of clouds to roll through in the early evening, with clear skies by 11 p.m. I made a last-minute decision to go for it, packed frantically, and headed up to Bear Lake, just a 90-minute drive away.

Once I arrived at the frozen lake, I set up my Canon 5D Mark III with a 16-35mm lens at 16mm, focused it at infinity, and began shooting back-to-back 30-second exposures at f/2.8, ISO 6400, triggering the camera with an intervalometer. An hour before midnight, the skies did indeed clear with the exception of a standing lenticular cloud over Longs Peak, lit from below by the glow of Denver some 50 miles away. With the images recording to a 64 GB card and the camera powered by a big, external battery pack, there was nothing for me to do but check the lens surface occasionally for condensation. I rolled out a foam pad, put on my gigantic down parka and bibs, lay down, and watched the meteors fly until dawn.

When I returned home, I located all the images that contained a bright meteor, then stacked all the meteor-containing images as layers in a single Photoshop file. I chose one image to provide the starry background, another to provide detail in the land, then masked out everything but the meteor streak from the remaining layers. In the final step, I rotated all the layers containing Geminid meteors (a few meteors were strays) so all the Geminid meteors appeared to emanate from the radiant, which lay in the constellation Gemini. I certainly didn’t see all of the meteors in this image fall simultaneously, but I did watch them fall one-by-one as I lay under the moonless sky, awed by the celestial fireworks. Although some may feel that the techniques I used produced an image that is more of a photo-illustration than a straight photograph, they did allow me to create a single image that captures an entire night of wonder.

I offer over 100 images on this site, in four or five sizes each and as many as five different presentations (loose, matted-only, framed, gallery-wrap canvas, and gallery float). It is impossible to keep every size and presentation of every image in stock at all times. Accordingly, most of the items I offer for sale on are hand-built one at a time as customers order them. It normally requires between five and ten business days to complete an order, but it may take longer if I am on an extended shoot. Shipping time is in addition to these figures. To get specific information about delivery time for a particular item, please call 303 499-3009 or email me. I will do my best to accommodate rush orders. Thanks for your patience!

All photographic prints, regardless of presentation (loose, matted-only, framed, etc.) are delicate and require careful packaging to be shipped safely. Accordingly, all online purchases will have a 15 percent charge added for shipping and handling. This shipping charge only covers shipments to the continental United States. Please contact me for a quote on shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, or to international destinations. If you would like to pick up your print at my home office in Boulder rather than have it shipped, please call 303 499-3009 (office) or 720 320-7126 (mobile) to complete your purchase and make arrangements for pickup. Alternatively, I can deliver prints in the Denver metro area for $1.00 per mile based on round-trip mileage.

All matted-only and framed prints larger than 24x30 inches, all gallery-wrap canvases and gallery-float prints larger than 30x40, and all framed panoramas wider than 30 inches, are too big to be shipped via FedEx ground and too big to fit in any standard-size art box. While these prints can be shipped, they require a custom-made crate and the cost is exorbitant ($300+). I strongly suggest that all customers who live outside the Denver metro area and who wish to purchase a print larger than the maximums specified above buy the loose version and take it to the custom frame shop of their choosing. Loose prints can be shipped rolled at the standard shipping rate of 15 percent of the retail price. I will gladly provide detailed instructions to the framer on the moulding I use and my preferred method of mounting and framing the piece.

I use elegant hardwood frames on all of my framed prints. The image above right shows the frame I use for the smallest framed size of this image. I use proportionally larger frames with the same color finish for larger prints. The moulding shape will vary, depending on the size. For more information on the frames I recommend for different size prints, please visit my framing page.

I allow returns for a full refund (minus shipping) for 30 days from the date of delivery if you are dissatisfied with the print. You are responsible for the cost of shipping the print back to me, including the cost of insuring it for the full retail value, and the print must arrive in salable condition for a refund to be issued.
