FAQs

How much do prints from Glenn Randall Photography cost?

I offer my images in a wide variety of sizes and presentations (loose, matted-only, framed, etc.). In addition, each image has a unique aspect ratio (ratio of height to width). The best way to see all the options I offer, the exact sizes, and the prices for each, is to go to the image page for the image you're interested in and scroll to the bottom of the page, where you'll find PayPal buttons with drop-down menus listing all the sizes and presentations that are available for purchase online. If you prefer, you can download my pricing guidelines (PDF) to get a general idea of prices for different options. Note that not all sizes and presentations listed in the pricing guidelines are available to order online because some are too big to be shipped. All sizes and presentations can be ordered, however, then picked up at my home office or delivered within the Denver metro area for a fee of $1.00 per mile based on round-trip mileage. For complete details, see Why can't some sizes and presentations be ordered online?

Will my print match the image on your website?

I work on a professional-quality monitor that I calibrate regularly. My prints match the image as seen on my website when my website is viewed on my monitor. Monitors vary widely in quality, however, and even professional-grade monitors can be calibrated to different settings. My prints should closely resemble the image as seen on your monitor when viewing my website, but I cannot guarantee that my prints will perfectly match a monitor I've never seen. I can guarantee that my prints will be the most evocative, compelling rendition I can produce of the image I originally captured. I do offer a 30-day money-back guarantee if you are not satisfied with the print. See my return policy.

What is a gallery-wrap canvas?

In the gallery-wrap canvas style of presentation, the image is first printed on high-quality canvas. The printed canvas is given three coats of protective lacquer, then stretched onto traditional artist stretcher bars such as those used by oil painters. All gallery-wrap canvases are ready to hang. The smallest size of both standard-format (4x5 aspect ratio) images and panoramic images uses stretcher bars measuring three-quarters of an inch thick. All other sizes use stretcher bars measuring one and a half inches thick. To see an example of a gallery-wrap canvas, please visit my canvas page.

What is a gallery float?

In the gallery float style of presentation, the print is first mounted onto high-quality 1/4" medium-density fiberboard, then covered with a UV-resistant, anti-glare, protective laminate. The edges are lightly beveled, and a decorative black trim is applied. In the final step, strips of one-inch thick MDF are attached to the back. These strips are recessed two inches from the edge of the piece so that the finished piece appears to "float" one inch away from the wall. The piece is hung from a French cleat, which is positioned atop a mirror bar attached to the wall. All mounting hardware is included. To see an example of a gallery float, please visit my gallery-float page.

What is the aspect ratio and why does it differ so much for different images?

The aspect ratio is the ratio of the long and short dimensions of the print. For example, a 16x20-inch print has an aspect ratio of 5:4. The aspect ratio of the print I offer for any particular image will vary depending on how I captured the original image. I shot many images on this site with a 4x5 field camera. Those images have a 5:4 aspect ratio. I shot more recent images with a high-end digital SLR. Those images have an aspect ratio of 3:2. I have slightly cropped some digital originals to achieve a better composition and to allow them to fit into standard-size mats and frames. These images have an aspect ratio of 15:11. I shot most of the panoramas on this site by stitching together multiple frames. These images have an aspect ratio that best captures the original scene rather than an arbitrary "panoramic" format like 3:1.

Please note that most of the images I offer for sale as prints are printed "full frame." This means that the print shows all of the image area originally captured in the field. It is not possible to add extra image area after the image is shot. In other words, if you find a vertical (portrait mode) image you like, but would prefer a horizontal version (landscape mode), you would have to be willing to crop off enough image area from the top and/or bottom of the original image to fit the horizontal format. In almost all cases, this will destroy the integrity of the original image. It is not possible to add extra image area to the sides of a vertical image to make it into a horizontal, or to add extra image area to the top and bottom of a horizontal image to make it into a vertical.

How long will it take for my print to be manufactured?

I offer over 100 images on this site, in four or five sizes each and as many as five different presentations (loose, matted-only, framed, gallery-wrap canvas, and gallery float). It is impossible to keep every size and presentation of every image in stock at all times. Accordingly, most of the items I offer for sale on GlennRandall.com are hand-built one at a time as customers order them. It normally requires between five and ten business days to complete an order, but it may take longer if I am on an extended shoot. Shipping time is in addition to these figures. To get specific information about delivery time for a particular item, please call 303 499-3009 or email me. I will do my best to accommodate rush orders. Thanks for your patience!

How much does shipping cost and how long does it take?

All photographic prints, regardless of presentation (loose, matted-only, framed, etc.) are delicate and require careful packaging to be shipped safely. Accordingly, all online purchases will have a 15 percent charge added for shipping and handling. This shipping charge only covers shipments to the continental United States. Please contact me for a quote on shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, or to international destinations. If you would like to pick up your print at my home office in Boulder rather than have it shipped, please call 303 499-3009 (office) or 720 320-7126 (mobile) to complete your purchase and make arrangements for pickup. Alternatively, I can deliver prints in the Denver metro area for $1.00 per mile based on round-trip mileage. Shipping within the continental United States normally takes one to five business days.

I realize many online retailers offer "free shipping." It's not actually free, of course; the retailer simply builds the cost of shipping into the cost of the item. I chose not to do that since it penalizes customers who choose to pick up their print at my home office. By only charging shipping to customers who actually need their purchase shipped, I can keep the price lower for customers who pick up their print.

Why can't some sizes and presentations be ordered online?

All matted-only and framed prints larger than 24x30 inches, all gallery-wrap canvases and gallery-float prints larger than 30x40, and all framed panoramas wider than 30 inches, are too big to be shipped via FedEx ground and too big to fit in any standard-size art box. While these prints can be shipped, they require a custom-made crate and the cost is exorbitant ($300+). I strongly suggest that all customers who live outside the Denver metro area and who wish to purchase a print larger than the maximums specified above buy the loose version and take it to the custom frame shop of their choosing. Loose prints can be shipped rolled at the standard shipping rate of 15 percent of the retail price. I will gladly provide detailed instructions to the framer on the moulding I use and my preferred method of mounting and framing the piece.

What frames do you use for your framed prints?

I use high-quality hardwood frames for all of my framed prints. To see the frames I suggest for different sizes of prints, please visit my framing page. To see the color of frame I suggest, please visit the image page for the image you are interested in, where you'll see photos of the actual frame I use on the smallest-size framed print. I generally suggest using the same color frame on all sizes of a particular image.
